NocoForest Land

Most of the 31-acres is fairly steep and heavily wooded forest. The forest, along with the creek, is the main reason we chose this place. It is quiet, lush, diverse, and a source of limitless adventure and pleasure. Different species of maple including sugar, red, and striped are in the majority with paper and yellow birch, pine, cedar, hickory, and elm adding to the diversity. There are numerous ledges delineating the hillside and giving creatures homes for the winter. An old logging road cuts through a large area of it creating a year round walking path. It could also be access to a sugar bush or homesite.

In early spring, parts of the hillside are thickly covered with ramps - aka wild leeks. They are so thick we collected a pound in 5 minutes following careful wildcrafting principles. With acres of them available, they could provide the first harvest of a 3-season forest farm. Fiddlehead ferns follow in abundance just as sugaring season begins in earnest. A hobby sized sugar bush might be of interest; there are remnants of an old sugar shack along the path.

The path is a 20-30 minute walking loop, mostly along the old logging roads. We have seen wild cats, moose, deer, horsehoe hare, bears, and beavers. There are so many birds we have not identified them all, but we frequently hear the ruffed grouse drumming. Winter hikes are an adventure in tracking prints and scat.

At the top of the land along the ridge are multiple vernal pools, some of them too large to cross; one or more of them flows underground and down into a small seasonal spring that crosses the walking path below. It is a challenge for us geezers to get all the way to the top so we have not explored the ridge much and have not located the two top property corner markers.
